Rachel Keller is a fictional character in The Ring film series. The character was created by writer-producer Ehren Kruger and played by Naomi Watts, serves as the protagonist in The Ring and The Ring Two, sharing similarities to Reiko Asakawa from the original Japanese films.Introduced in 2002's film, Rachel is an investigative journalist trying to figure out the best way to avoid death after watching a video that was cursed that she discovered during her investigation into the murder of her niece. Rachel is required to look into the past of Samara Morgan when her son develops mysterious illnesses. Ruth asks Rachel Keller as an investigative journalist to investigate the mystery surrounding Katie's death. Rachel is informed by Ruth, her sister, that she discovered Katie's deformed body inside the closet. She also revealed that Katie died of an attack on her heart. Katie's friends tell Rachel about the legend of the tape that was cursed and how Katie's friend Becca was put in an institution due to Katie's death. She also discovers Katie's boyfriend as well as two of her friends all died in bizarre accidents on the same night at 10 pm. Rachel goes to Shelter Mountain Inn, where she stays in Cabin 12. The cabin in question is one Katie and her friends stayed in when they saw the tape that had been cursed. Rachel stumbles across the tape, and then watches it after which the phone rings. Rachel hears a voice utter "seven days". Rachel seeks assistance from her ex-boyfriend Noah Clay, a video analyst. Rachel learns later that Aidan (her son with Noah) saw the tape and informed her that he believed what she said. Rachel goes through the tape in order in order to determine the whereabouts of the lighthouse. It was on Moesko Island. Anna Morgan is a cursed horse breeder was on the tape. Rachel discovered that Anna was the mother of an adopted child named Samara who was capable of burning disturbing images into the bodies and minds of humans, animals and even objects. Rachel is introduced to Anna's widower Richard. Richard makes Rachel leave the scene as shortly as she starts asking questions about Samara.
