Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family of Ford, they were managed by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal place for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her comedy stand-up that was added to her portfolio in 1996.
